you're a tourist here.

#1: Think of the most deafening sound you can imagine. Describe it in great detail, and have your character hear it for the first time at the start of a story.

She saw it first. A gray cloud ascending up the sky like a cough blowing from the ground.

And then the sound.

It was a rumble that started in the ground and then an explosion of heat, as if the sun itself had found a voice and screamed. Her ears rang, turning moist and she wondered absurdly as she collapsed into the ground and clutched at her head whether it was possible for her to bleed out from her ears.

Against the lancing pain in her head, her knees stubbornly straightened, as if she could outrun the light of explosion and the rumbling stampede of noise and poison. But it stayed in her ears, ringing and ringing.

The earth had awoken, had crashed into another floating rock, had turned itself inside out. Her thoughts frantically flew from one hypothesis to another until they kneeled behind the sheer noise. Just the noise. Until the silence of her pain and her shock became deafening.

i decided to take up this challenge months ago with the technical addendum that i would go through peter boxall's list (as found in this most comprehensive version i could find here) randomly by generating a number between, well, 1 and 1001 and reading that specific book. however, my first pick was some 1700s pulp novel about some clock or some cuckoo bird or a cuckoo clock i don't even know some bird or some shit. so understandably i settled into a period of procrastination and ennui. that is, until i finally finished persuasion yesterday, which i began at the beginning of 2018, in a bid to finish my 50 books goal for this year's goodreads challenge.

i figured what better way to start a new and coming year by taking up a challenge that i know i'm gonna give up on for 85% of the year and only pick up at the latter part for another new year in order to satisfy my general urge to feel useful and worldly?

i meant this post to be a masterlist as i slowly work my way through this challenge. so far, i've read 19 books out of 1000-something, so we're going to be here awhile.

Naruto was asleep on the couch by the time Sakura’s final class ended and her caffeine crash didn’t give her enough reason to fight him. That was how Sasuke found the two of them at 2AM after a stint at the library, limbs haphazardly arranged with their mouths opened unattractively.

“How the fuck did you two get into my apartment?” he muttered before shoving Naruto’s legs off the cushion for space and joining them both in sleep-deprived slumber.
